Music
Our high-quality music education engages and inspires our pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they develop a critical engagement with music allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.
The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:
- perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
- learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
- understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations
At St Matthew’s we enable our pupils to do this through:
- Learning to sing and to use their voices
- Creating a culture where singing is a key aspect in our daily worship
- Learning to create and compose music on their own and with others
- Have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument
- Use technology appropriately
- Enjoy music through a variety of high quality educational experiences
- Learning about the history of music alongside learning about genres
At St Matthew’s to accompany our music teaching we use Charanga. Charanga is an online resource that offers a fully comprehensive scheme of work focussing on Listening and Appraising, Creating and Exploring and Singing and Performing. Each year group has their own schemes to follow on Charanga building on skills and with a variety of music genres.
Year 4 pupils have the opportunity to discover and develop skills by learning to play the clarinet under the Surrey Arts ‘Tune Up’ programme. Lessons are taught by Surrey County peripatetic teachers and an end of year concert is held to demonstrate the skills that have been learnt throughout the year.
We have a biannual performing arts show where we showcase music. Could link be added to the previous performance video
